One Sunday night on The Polar Express, I was working as Lollipop the Elf with elf Sugar Cookie on the VIP car. We had a family of 10 who were repeat VIP riders. They had 4 children with them aging in range from 3 to about 10. The 10-year-old was a little girl, and she was very inquisitive. The 10-year girl had been very inquisitive all night long. She was asking us very specific questions about the North Pole, how we got our jobs, how old we had to be to work as an elf, etc. It became obvious this little girl was quite into this whole experience and that we had pulled her into the magic as we headed back to the Carson City Depot from the North Pole.
Her father watched grinning ear to ear the entire ride. We were leading the passengers in Christmas songs. When one of the songs was over Sugar Cookie complimented the guests on their singing ability. She told them we had openings for the Elf Choir at the North Pole if they were looking to join us. This little girl jumped out of her seat and asked Sugar Cookie when rehearsals were and where they were. Sugar Cookie answered, “They are at the North Pole on Thursday nights at 6:30 p.m.” This little girl turned to her dad and asked if she could join the Elf Choir at the North Pole.
Her dad’s face went blank. Sugar Cookie and I looked at each other with a “What do we say now look.” After about 30 seconds the little girl’s dad piped up and said, “Sweetie, you have dance class on Thursday nights at that time so you can’t do that right now.”
Well, these two elves breathed a sigh of relief and changed the subject really quick. It also helped that we arrived back at the Carson City Depot about 5 minutes later and this magical experience came to an end.
So much fun to create the magic needed to transform one little girl’s journey to the North Pole a memory to last a lifetime.
Bravo to us!!!!!
